Rondout Creek Lighthouse

Location: On the Hudson River, at the mouth of Rondout Creek, in Ulster County, near Kingston

Description: Current light is buff-colored brick, 2 1/2 story dwelling with attached square tower. 1837 light was wood. 1867 light was similar to Saugerties.

History of light:

1837: First lighthouse built

1867: Second lighthouse built

1915: Current lighthouse built on new site

1946: Electricity installed in lighthouse

1954: Lighthouse automated

1954: Second lighthouse, which had been abandoned and deteriorating, is demolished

1984: Hudson River Maritime Museum enters into a lease with the Coast Guard

2002, June 19: The lighthouse is transferred to the City of Kinston

Current use: Active aid to navigation/museum

Public access?  Tours are available on weekends Memorial Day to Labor Day.
